Prolougue: The Beginning of a Great Friendship

It was the first day of fourth grade, the class was buzzing about a new student that would be joining. “I wonder if they’re smart or dumb” said a girl. “I wonder if they’re hot or ugly” said a boy. One person; who could care less about the new student, was sitting quietly in his seat for the teacher to come in. This boy was Drew Rowsel. He was the most popular of his class; he had crazy fan girls where ever he went. Even his mom wasn’t this crazed about him. He had chartreuse hair and matching eyes.
“Okay class. Please take your seats” said a soft, but firm female voice. The students quickly took their seats, quieting the room instantly.
“As all of you know class we’re receiving a new student today. I’d like you to give a warm welcome to May Maple”
A small brunette stepped out from behind the teacher. She had a large smile on and her sapphire eyes were filled with joy. She had on their traditional school uniform. A pale yellow polo shirt, dark indigo skirt, white knee-high socks, and black ballet flats. But she had a red bandana on.
“Nice to meet you all” she said in a cute voice after bowing. Drew looked up, he felt something in the pit of his stomach, but thought it was his breakfast acting up.
“May, you can sit down behind Drew. He’s over there next to the window”
May happily walked over to her seat, but as she passed Drew she gave him a ‘hello there’ smile, pink crept on his face, but soon subsided. ‘That’s perfect. Another physco girl, just what I need’ he thought.
The rest of the day went all as planned, no interruptions, or embarrassing mishaps. (Yes I know you all are disappointed) Then free time came. The class once again busied itself with gossip. Drew heard some talking about May. He saw his crazy fan girls conjuring ideas about May’s initiation into the ‘I love Drew’ club. He overheard some guys talking about how cute and hot May was.
May was doing her homework early; she didn’t have time this afternoon.
“Argh! Math is sooooo complicated! Why did they invent it anyway?” she exasperated, letting her head fall to her desk.
“Maybe if that ridiculous bandana weren’t on your head you’d be able to think better” said a voice in front of her.
“Huh?”
“There’s nothing inside that bandana head of yours, is there?” Drew said turning around.
“I’m not the one with the green hair. I think you’ve been eating too many veggies, lettuce head” May coolly replied walking out of the room. Gasps filled the room, the fan girls shook their heads in rejection, the boys starting to speak even louder, and Drew just sat their in awe.
‘She just insulted me. Maybe she won’t be such a fan girl. She’ll be interesting to tease” He thought evilly.
-----
Recess time was unfolding, Drew had been sent to the office for something he didn’t do. One of the fourth grade bullies had purposely gotten him in trouble. He was about to get detention when a small voice interrupted the principal.
“He didn’t do it! He was framed!” said the voice.
“Huh?” Drew whipped around and saw May standing there
“I swear he didn’t do it. I saw everything and that bully over there lied. Drew’s innocent. I would never lie” she said in a defending tone. The principal was equally shocked, but believed her plea. He only punished the bully and let Drew go back to his recess.
“Why’d you do that?” Drew asked.
“I just don’t like it when people are blamed for something they didn’t do. It’s not right” she smiled and walked out of the principal’s office.
------
Lunchtime had arrived to the students everyone was happy with their homemade lunches and the school made ones too. May was going to buy her lunch when she bumped into a tall figure in front of her.
“Fork over your lunch money, twerp” said the figure.
“But I don’t want to! I need to eat my lunch”
“Just hand it over already! Don’t make me hurt you!” boomed the voice.
“I don’t care! I want to keep it and I don’t care what you do!” she yelled back. Drew had been watching the confrontation from a distance. ‘Man................that girl’s got spunk” he thought.
“We’ll see about that!” instantly May was punched in the stomach. She fell backwards holding her abdomen, tears in her eyes.
“Now give it to me!” the figure boomed again, grabbing May’s wrist.
“I said I’m not giving it to you! Now let go of me!”
“I’m going to get you good!” instantly the figure was hit in the head with a soccer ball.
“Get away from her! NOW!” Drew, fully angered threw a frisbee at the figure.
They fell back, knocked unconscious.
“Are you okay?” drew asked looking down at May.
“Yeah, I’m fine. Why’d you do that?” she asked, blushing as he helped her up.
“I...err...I needed to repay you for what happened in the principal’s office”
“No problem. Thanks”
“Don’t mention it. C’mon I’ll by you lunch” he offered.
“It’s okay. I still have my money” she said opening her clenched fist.
“No, my treat. I’m feeling generous today”
May nodded and the two of them headed off to buy lunch. Ever since that day they’ve been always looking out for each other, they eventually became best friends
